Mijn werk ontwikkelt zich traag en uit aandacht. Ik onderzoek verstilling en het moment waarop tijd lijkt te vertragen en zichtbaarder wordt. De schilderijen nodigen uit tot een geconcentreerde blik.
My work develops slowly and through attention. I explore stillness and the moment in which time seems to slow down and become more perceptible. The paintings invite a concentrated and attentive gaze.
Mijn werk ontwikkelt zich via een bewust traag proces. Schilderen is voor mij geen middel om een beeld te illustreren, maar een manier om aandacht te richten en tijd zichtbaar te maken. De werken ontstaan voornamelijk in pastel, soms aangevuld met houtskool. In dat proces ontstaat wat ik benoem als narratieve verstilling: beelden waarin een verhaal aanwezig is, zonder zich volledig prijs te geven, en waarin verleden en heden stil naast elkaar bestaan.
Hoewel ik werk binnen landschap, interieur en stilleven, ligt de samenhang niet in het onderwerp, maar in de benadering. Atmosfeer, terughoudendheid en aandachtig kijken vormen de constante. Mijn beelden worden niet opgevat als voorstelling, maar als aanwezigheid: situaties waarin tijd vertraagt en soms lijkt stil te vallen.
Licht speelt daarbij een dragende rol. Het bepaalt de ruimte en onthult hoe objecten en plaatsen zich tot elkaar verhouden. Ook textuur is essentieel: oppervlakken dragen sporen van gebruik en geschiedenis, en maken zichtbaar hoe dingen geworden zijn wat ze zijn.
Elk werk ontstaat langzaam. Het vraagt kijken, hernemen en wachten. Die traagheid is geen beperking, maar een voorwaarde. Daardoor blijft het aantal werken beperkt en geconcentreerd.
In houding en aandacht voel ik mij verwant met de schilderkunst van de zeventiende eeuw, eerder dan met de snelle circulatie van beelden vandaag. Schilderen is voor mij een manier om te vertragen en aandacht vast te houden, tegen de snelheid van beelden in.
My work develops through a consciously slow process. Painting, for me, is not a means to illustrate an image, but a way of focusing attention and making time visible. My works are made mainly in pastel, sometimes supplemented with charcoal. In this process, what I refer to as narrative stillness emerges: images in which a story is present without fully revealing itself, and where past and present exist quietly side by side.
Although my work encompasses landscape, interior, and still life, its coherence does not lie in subject matter, but in approach. Atmosphere, restraint, and attentive observation form the constant. The images are not conceived as representations, but as presences: situations in which time slows down and sometimes seems to come to a standstill.
Light plays a decisive role. It shapes the space and reveals how objects and places relate to one another. Texture is equally essential: surfaces carry traces of use and history, making visible how things have become what they are.
Each work comes into being slowly. It requires looking, reconsidering, and waiting. This slowness is not a limitation, but a condition. As a result, the number of works remains limited and concentrated.
In both attitude and attention, I feel connected to seventeenth-century painting rather than to the rapid circulation of images today. Painting is, for me, a way of slowing down and sustaining attention in the face of that speed.
Iemand merkte ooit op dat mijn werk de tijd even kan stilzetten. Misschien is dat wat schilderkunst vandaag nog kan zijn: niet versnellen of verklaren, maar ruimte creëren voor verstilling en aandacht.
Someone once remarked that my work has the ability to hold time still for a moment. Perhaps this is what painting can still offer today: not to accelerate or to explain, but to create space for stillness and attention.
Biografie
Peter Livens woont en werkt in Mechelen.
Hij volgde zijn opleiding aan de Academie van Lier en studeerde nadien aan Sint‑Lucas en het Hoger Instituut Sint‑Maria in Antwerpen.
Naast zijn eigen artistieke praktijk is hij actief binnen kunstkring T'Steen in Weerde, waar hij als voorzitter en lesgever betrokken is bij het begeleiden van artistieke ontwikkeling. Daarnaast geeft hij occasioneel demonstraties in andere kunstorganisaties.
Zijn schilderpraktijk ontwikkelt zich onafhankelijk van zijn beroepsleven en wordt gekenmerkt door een trage en aandachtige werkwijze. Hij realiseert een beperkt aantal werken per jaar, waarbij concentratie, verstilling en een zorgvuldige benadering van licht en materie centraal staan.
Peter Livens lives and works in Mechelen.
He studied at the Academy of Lier and later at Sint-Lucas and the Higher Institute Sint-Maria in Antwerp.
Alongside his own artistic practice, he is active within the art association 't Steen in Weerde, where he is involved as both chairman and instructor, supporting artistic development. He also occasionally gives demonstrations in other art organizations.
His painting practice develops independently of his professional life and is characterized by a slow and attentive working process. He produces a limited number of works each year, in which concentration, stillness, and a careful engagement with light and material play a central role.
